FOUR-WEEK YOUNG ARTIST INTENSIVE
For students entering grades 8, 9, & 10

2010 Session:
Monday, July 12 - Saturday, August 7

The Young Artist Intensive program encourages students to explore their talents in the performing arts. The program offers a challenging level of instruction, and our class placement process ensures that all students enjoy a curriculum appropriate to their stage of development.

All students are cast in a theatrical or musical presentation, OR a dance production. Class placements and production castings are held the day following student arrival. Residential students are required to take a minimum of four classes a day. The program is demanding and requires students to juggle a busy schedule. The session concludes with two evenings of public performances held during the last week of camp. The final Friday of the session is Showcase Day, and parents are encouraged to attend. Students spend the entire day sharing what they have learned in each class.

boy_girl_laughingYoung Artist Intensive students have five class periods per day, and can choose from a selection of dance, theater and musical theater core classes, with electives in dramatic writing, visual arts and equestrian. Students cast in the public performances must attend evening and weekend rehearsals. Students also have the option of signing up for fee-based activities, including whitewater rafting, semi-private riding lessons, and private instrumental music or voice lessons. Private voice lessons (one 30 minute lesson per week) are offered to students who qualify based on their class placement. Other Young Artist Intensive students interested in private voice lessons will be accommodated as space permits.

Daily Routine

RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS
Youth_Festival_1For Residential Students, each program is structured to meet the needs of the student's ages with appropriate classes and activities. There is some free time each day, but residential students are busy from breakfast into the evening hours.

A typical day begins at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast and cabin chores.

Monday through Friday, there are classes and planned activities throughout the day, from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 or 5:30 p.m., with some free time before and after lunch.

Young Artist and Pre-Professional students have rehearsal periods both before and after dinner, while Residential Junior students have an evening activity period after dinner.

For Young Artist & Pre-Professional students, the weekends allow time for laundry, trips to town, outdoor recreational activities and camp activities such as dances, talent shows, and camp Olympics.

There are no rehearsals on Saturday, and two rehearsal periods on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00/10:00 p.m.

DAY STUDENTS
Day Students
arrive in time for their first scheduled class, activity, or rehearsal period and leave after their last scheduled class, activity, or rehearsal.

Discovery Day Camp has a set daily schedule from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Day students  in the Junior, Young Artist and Pre-Professional programs require more flexibility. Students enrolled in less than four classes may have open periods, depending upon their individual class schedule.

Young Artist and Pre-Professional students who are participating in a performance (requires a minimum of two classes) are required to be at all evening and Sunday rehearsals. No exceptions.

Junior Day students are not eligible for evening activities.

Lunch is included for all Day Students, and other meals are available for a $4.00 per-meal fee.

WHAT TO BRING
In late April students will receive a handbook specific to their program describing what they should bring to camp. Please review the list carefully, as it may include items for special projects, or specific class and and program enrollments. For all dance classes, appropriate dancewear and footwear is required. Black character shoes are required for students cast in theater and musical theater performances. For equestrian classes, long pants and a sturdy heeled boot are mandatory.
